Diseases of the Civil War This page mainly focuses on, Dysentry, Pneumonia, and Typhoid Fever, the three main diseases of the American Civil War.
Dysentery (also known as Flux): Can be caused by bacterial infection or parasitic worms, can cause the colon to become inflamed resulting in bloody feces. In the recovery phases of the disease (If, of course, the host survives) the patient can experience intolerence to lactose. But if the patient goes without treatment, death can occur. Do to the fact that the diarhia takes out important salts and nutrients causing dehydration.
Pneumonia: Caused by many infectents, effects the lungs and disrupts the resperitory system. Also causing fever and in some cases confusion. If the patient is very young or elderly death may occur. And it is the leading cause of death for children under 5 today.
Typhoid Fever (also known as The Bends): Caused by Salmonella (a bacteria), main symptoms include systemic disease and diarrhea. But also causes hallucinations, attention deficit, fatigue, and many more. But the most astounded thing is it is said to have killed nearly 300 million people.
There were many diseases of the Civil War so I could only speek of the most common of them all.
